GTA V Review

GTA V Review

Grand Theft Auto first hit the American Shelves in the beginning of 1998. It introduced a large sandbox style game where anything goes, including stealing cars, crushing pedestrians and shootouts with the cops. The criminal element was in its height of glory, and gamers went nuts for it!

Fast forward 17 years and we now have GTA V for the PS4 and Xbox One in stunning high definition with 30 frames per second action. It is the same game from the 360 and PS3 but with better graphics, 160 more songs to listen to as you cause major mayhem, and the newly introduced first person viewpoint.

The first person view is definitely more intimate and makes things like driving at high speeds harder, but more thrilling. Watching as the character swipes his phone or flips off an antagonist makes the game seem more immersive. It does give you the feel that you are really there in Los Santos as opposed to playing a character in the game. This was a win for Rockstar because it gave the game a new feel and made gamers want to play it again.

The game boasts 30+ hours of main story play. The main story is very well written and enjoyable. The main story of GTA V is probably some of the best storytelling within a game. You will find yourself angry disturbed and even laughing out loud at times. Overall it makes for a great experience.

GTA has been criticized for side missions becoming repetitive and boring. Some of this still exists in GTA V, but many side missions are fun and exciting. I’m not a big fan of the racing aspects but others love it, so to each their own. The fact is there is so much to do that this game can definitely keep your interest for a long time.

The city and surrounding areas are beautiful and rich with eye candy. The NPC’s are the most believable of any sandbox game and definitely add to the experience. Controls are good, perhaps they are clunky at times, but with so much to do and take in, the game performs remarkably well. You may notice a bit of hesitation when approaching busy intersections at high speed with a lot of cars and pedestrians around, but otherwise no problems at all.

The game does offer multiplayer, but it is not that great. It boasts rooms with 30 players but the most I’ve seen is like 9 or 10. Overpowered veterans will harass newer players and it takes a long time to build your character up. This aspect could be fun if you play coop with your friends but there is much lacking for GTA V where multiplayer is concerned.

It should be noted that this game is NOT for children. Gamers partake in an abundance of nefarious activities which may include but are not limited to: picking up hookers, doing drugs, all kinds of violent crime, visiting strip clubs where all is seen. The language and visuals are extremely graphic, so be advised. Not much is left to the imagination, the hookers and strip club scenes often turn downright pornographic.

This is the only game that offers so many different activities and does most of them very well. That phrase a jack of all trade but master of none does not really apply to GTA as it is a master of many. I am certain we can look forward to many more installments of this highly popular franchise in the future.

I would give this game a ranking of 8.5 out of 10 because of the more racy content and the lacking multiplayer. GTA V is extremely good but not for the weak of heart, those who are easily offended, or the innocent.
