Far Cry 4 Review

Far Cry 4 is set in the Himalaya’s and features a big beautiful world open to explore and filled with all kinds of delightfully fun adventures and missions. The scenery is tremendous on current-gen consoles. You will be mesmerized by scenic lakes, mountains and other landscapes.

You play the role of Ajay Ghale who returns to the fictional land of Kyrat to spread the ashes of his deceased mother. It is not long before Ajay is caught up in the struggle for freedom. Your character goes from tough to a boss throughout your adventures.

The most entertaining character is the evil Pagan Min, the main antagonist in the game. He has been criticized for his appearance. Pagan Min dons a pink suit (hey, Joker wears a purple suit and nobody complains) and a stupid haircut. Looks aside his introductory appearance can be described as more than memorable, no spoilers here. He is different than Vaas, a great enemy from Far Cry 3, but perhaps even crazier and arguably more sadistic. His screen time is short and I would have liked to seen more of this well voiced villain. This was also the case with Vaas from Far Cry 3.

Much of Far Cry 4 is cut and pasted from Far Cry 3. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. The formula works and has been improved for Far Cry 4. More modes of travel exist and you can even mount an elephant to cause hilarious mayhem and destruction. Overturning cars with your trunk and watching the bad guys fly while screaming never gets old. Helicopters, snow mobiles and rock climbing are some of the improvements made to this title.

You still climb towers to lift the fog of war and reveal new locations and side missions. These are kind of puzzles and give you a sense of satisfaction each time you complete one. Liberating areas from enemies is also part of the game but this time, enemies will come back to retake the captured ground causing you to drop what your doing and return to defend against an onslaught of enemy soldiers. This may be a little annoying and frustrating, but overall it is more realistic behavior from enemies. Why wouldn’t they return to counter attack?

Hunting and skinning animals to improve your equipment through crafting new upgrades is also still part of the game. The drug induced psychedelic trips are also here. They are a highlight of the series now and provide a trippy alternative to the land of Kyrat’s scenery.

Versatility is emphasized in Far Cry 4. there are so many ways to go about attacking and conquering enemy holds. As in Far Cry 4, you can stealth attack, do a full frontal assault or any combo of the two. The outposts have become more difficult in this installment so some thought will be required. This is one of the features that make this an interesting and different experience from other first person shooters.

Competitive multiplayer has changed in the sense that now you fight on one of the two distinct sides. The Far Cry Chronicles is a 5v5 game allows you to be part of the Golden Path or the Rakshasa. The Golden Path uses more traditional means like guns, vehicles and traps, while the Rakshasa are more mystical and utilize various types of arrows and invisibility to take down foes. It is a fun experience either way you play.

Far Cry 4 is a great game and sometimes tends to be underrated for its low character development and s non motivating story. My response is if those things are most important to you then play an RPG. If you want a different type of FPS that provides a plethora of things to do in an open beautiful world, get Far Cry 4.
