Batman Arkham Knight Review
Batman Arkham Knight has been billed as the last installment for Rocksteady Studio. They have revolutionized the superhero genre for video games. Before Arkham Asylum, most superhero games were just ho-hum. Rocksteady came along and made a game which provided a fresh take and a far superior fighting technique.
This Batman Arkham series has been stellar in the past and this, the newest and last title in the series is no exception. The fighting is just as smooth and fluid as it ever was. Batman Arkham Knight introduces even more moves and counter-moves to add to the fun of taking on a gang of enemies, as only the Caped Crusader could do. Enemies are plentiful and exist all over the city. Combat is still great and the predator style is as fun as ever. Some enemies are notched up a bit and this only adds to the fun.
The map of Gotham now consists of three areas and is the largest map to ever grace a Batman title. The large map can now be negotiated with the help of a rocket powered batmobile.
The batmobile provides a new aspect to the series. It may be controlled remotely and Rocksteady does a good job of working it into the story and puzzle solving missions that exist in the Arkham series. It becomes your winch and you will need it to pull down objects often. You can race through the streets of Gotham blowing through any obstacle in your way. The batmobile now transforms into a tank like vehicle. Yep, Batman operates a tank with guns blazing! You destroy the drones and some characters will even comment on this technique not being Batman’s style. Tank battles may not be very Batman like but they are kind of fun and do add to the game. I would also say that the tank battles do become repetitive as you take out enemy armored cars. Many comic book types will no doubt complain about this, but Rocksteady included it nonetheless. Speaking of anti-Batman behavior, you can now run thugs over in the street and even electrocute them with your batmobile.
The usual suspects show up in the cast of characters. Enemies include Scarecrow, Riddler, Two Face, Penguin, Manbat, and the militarized Arkham Knight. Kevin Conroy delightfully voices our hero once again. Mark Hamill also does his famous maniacal version of the Joker. Robin, Nightwing and Catwoman also make appearances as an AI sidekick in Batman Arkham Knight. You can also switch to them during the action.
The batcave is missing however. There is enough to do in the streets, but it’s absence is notable. Not that there was ever too much to do there in the previous titles. Boss fights are also missing in Batman Arkham Knight. I suppose payers were frustrated with them, but I miss the satisfaction of beating Bane, Deadshot, and the other bosses mano y mano. Although I must admit the boss battles were often tedious and were remembered more fondly only after beating them and they were over.
Overall, this has been a tremendous series and Batman Arkham Knight finishes it with a bang. These games make you feel like you are the Batman and that is not an easy thing to do.
