Dragon Age Inquisition Review

Dragon Age Inquisition is a huge game with a lot to do. After many players complained about DA2, Bioware has responded with the third and arguably the best game in the franchise. Well, at least in the top two. That’s just me being facetious. Seriously though, this game is beautiful and lasts for 100 or so hours.

The lands are large and absolutely stunning. Cut scenes are a joy as well. Early on in the game you come across a giant fighting with a dragon near the ocean. The dragon flies off while the giant hurls huge boulders. It is a scene that set the tone of the game for me. I thought, “how cool is that?”

There are tons of side missions that exist in all the lands, some of them are really fun, others are meh. You may have to take down a band of pirates by defeating their leader in combat(fun), or you may have to get some blankets for the poor(meh). Whether you like it or not you will have to complete some of them to get your character to be strong enough to continue the main mission. The main mission is only about a quarter of the game, so most of your time is spent doing the side missions. Some like it, some don’t.

The story is somewhat ambiguous and you may feel a little lost when you first start the game, but that does change as you become involved and get the feel for the large areas to explore. The characters are well done and the voice acting is superb, but in my opinion they don’t capture the comradery felt from Dragon Age Origins. But to be fair this is a different type of game. You aren’t just leading your party, you are heading up an entire movement, and that does play out well. You go from being a lowly nobody to becoming an extremely powerful leader with many fates in your hand, and that journey is always fun.

The game does have some bugs and they will frustrate you at times. The first dragon fight in the Hinterlands has provided problems for many people, and myself included. The game froze about 85% of the way into the battle, and it is a long battle. I did have some choice words as I rebooted the game. Although after all is said and done you can forgive some irritation after playing through a great game.

Combat is fun and can be done on the fly or with a newly added tactical combat system for this installment on the consoles. If you fancy yourself more of a tactician, you can freeze the action and issuee orders to your party individually. This is fun as you can watch a great plan come together. You can set down traps and lure the bad guys into them while a mage blasts them with aoe and your rogue sneaks around the flank for a surprise attack. There are many imaginative ways to approach a battle. This is more time consuming but will prove rewarding to those who enjoy such things. It should be said that the AI is not terrible and you don’t have to use the tactical combat system if you do not wish to.

It is an enjoyable game overall and the rpg element is well in the forefront. While I would like to see more character bonding, a stronger main story with more momentum, and less bugs, this is still a solid title.

I rank Dragon Age Inquisition Review 8.0 stars out of 10.
