Want to be trained as a superhero by superman or Batman, or how about being a super villain mentored by the Joker or Lex Luthor? Well, DC Universe may just be the game for you. The superhero craze is in full swing these days with movies, games and television shows popping out of the woodwork left and right. So DC Universe has enjoyed much success as well. A superhero MMO to punish evildoers or get those pesky goody two shoe heroes.
DC Universe Online has many fun elements of play. Originally launched as a typical game for $60 on the PS3 it since moved to the more viable free-to-play model and can be downloaded and played for free form the PSN store. There are in game items to upgrade for real money but a more spending reluctant gamer can get some good fun for free.
DC Universe Online offers daily missions, raids and battlegrounds to test your hero’s skills. It also has fun side quests and occasional “happenings” in the open world. Wait times are not too bad even in this mature stage of the game to get into battle type arenas. They now have a 1v1 arena that combat begins almost immediately.
Combat is the same old tab target and spam hot keys but does manage to bring block and block breakers into play quite well. You can jump right into combat early on with simulation battles where you choose a well known hero like the Batman, Joker, Superman and many others. Some characters have more than one version of themselves like Batman or the Joker. You can play many different characters but will need to earn them or purchase them with real money. The ones you start with for free are Robin and Harley Quinn. It takes some time to master the controls of each character, but once you do combat is fun and effective.
The world is vast and easily maneuvered around in with your unique set of powers. You can choose a flyer, speedster or acrobat to move around the world and all of them do a decent job of making you feel like a real superhero. It is really fun and fulfilling flying around at super speeds or running super fast up giant skyscrapers to leap through the air. Mobility is key to an open world sandbox like this.
Customization offers many options to brand your unique look. you can be a shirtless muscle man, to tights with a cape flapping in the wind, or maybe more of a militaristic GI Joe look. That is totally up to you and you can lock your appearance regardless of the items you currently have equipped.
There is a lot to do, duo’s, missions, arenas, battlegrounds, raids, open world exploration and combat, the list goes on. This is a big game and very fulfilling. The most important thing about a game like this is that it makes you actually feel like you are a super powered individual in a normal world. DC Universe Online does capture this phenomenon and give you the feeling that you are a real superhero.
